Marathon man heads for town
ADVENTURER and ultra distance runner Richard Bowles has experienced snowstorms, a swollen Murray River, strained muscles and angry bulls in tackling the treacherous terrain of Australia's rugged Bicentennial National Trail.
He is now running through Queensland, his fourth state, on his marathon 5330km run to support SANE Australia's work for people with a mental illness.
Run BNT team hit Kilkivan this afternoon before heading off to Maryborough, where they are expected to arrive on Monday.
The Bicentennial National Trail follows old coach roads, stock routes, brumby tracks, rivers and fire trails along the length of the Great Dividing Range.
It's the world's longest marked trail, traversing remote bush in national parks and crossing mountains, rivers, rainforest and dry plains.
It was conceived by RM Williams in 1972 and officially opened in 1988.
"In the years since it was launched not many people have completed the trail in its entirety, yet alone run it," Richard said.
"I'm hoping to highlight the importance of mental and physical health on this journey of a lifetime."
