A 47-YEAR-OLD South Grafton woman, who died in a house fire yesterday morning, was described as a "lovely soul" by a neighbour.

Debbie Fordham met the woman for a chat on Thursday around 11pm, just hours before the fire in the Margaret Cres home.

"It is such a shock; you never expect these things to happen," she said.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and discovered a two-bedroom fibro cottage alight. The 47-year-old woman was found unconscious in the front bedroom. She was later pronounced dead.

NSW Police and Fire Rescue Service are yet to determine the cause of the blaze.
