Hundreds without power after surge
MORE than 500 people have had their power cut and electrical appliances damaged in a massive electrical surge.
The surge happened when a 33,000 volt power line fell onto a 11,000 volt line at midnight on Wednesday, cutting electricity to more than 10,000 homes and businesses in the Nambour and Yandina regions.
A secondary fault, the cause still unknown, surged through about 570 homes, destroying thousands of dollars worth of appliances.
Energex spokesman Graham Metcalf said power would not be restored to the homes until a safety check was complete.
"At this stage we do not know the cause and we are just completing the home inspections and making sure it is safe to reinstate the power," Mr Metcalf said.
The company has asked homeowners affected by the surge to either contact their insurance company or Energex on 13 12 53.
