Football star says play safe
FORMER Newcastle Knights star and now gambling counsellor, Ashley Gordon, will bring his "play it safe" message to Ballina tomorrow, May 11.
This is one of a series of free events organised on the North Coast as part of a State Government campaign targeting problem gambling in NSW Aboriginal communities with community members, government and non-government agencies invited to take part.
In the Let's Talk Gambling community workshops, Ashley will discuss the history of problem gambling, impacts on culture and community, and options for seeking help - including a new dedicated Aboriginal Help Line providing support, education and information on gambling for Aboriginal people (1800 PLAY IT SAFE - 1800 752 948).
"In Aboriginal communities, gambling can be linked to alcohol and drug abuse, domestic violence, financial hardship, crime and mental health issues," Mr Gordon said.
"I've seen these problems first-hand during visits to more than 100 Aboriginal communities throughout Australia."
The Ballina event will be held at the Jali Local Aboriginal Land Council, 8/48 Tamar St, Ballina, from 9.30am-noon, with a free lunch included.
