Earthquake hits Tamworth

A MAGNITUDE-4.2 earthquake has hit the Tamworth area in northern New South Wales.

The quake hit to the north-west of Tamworth at a depth of 17 kilometres shortly after 9.30pm (AEST) on Friday night.

Residents in the area reported feeling two tremors.

Geoscience Australia says the quake could have been felt up to 76 kilometres away from the epicentre, and residents as far away as Armidale and Bellingen reported feeling the tremors.

Tamworth locals spilled out onto the street after the first quake hit.
