Crash victim killed during police chase a suspected thief

A CRITICAL investigation team has been sent to the scene where a suspected thief was killed during a police chase on the NSW Central Coast on Wednesday.

Police were following a car through Barnsley, near Newcastle, when it veered off the road and smashed into a tree.

The male driver died at the scene while his female passenger was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Earlier in the evening, police had been called to the Teralba train station following reports money had been stolen from a ticketing machine.

The car involved in the crash was seen leaving the station before police began a pursuit.

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Details about the deceased's age and home town were not available on Wednesday night.
