Casino nurses restrict activities in protest

CASINO and District Memorial Hospital nurses from Monday will impose an administration ban and restrict their activities to patient care alone amid claims they are being run ragged by staff shortages.

On Thursday next week nurses will rally in Casino to protest against the situation.

NSW Nurses Association representative Nola Scilinato said the nurses would continue the admin ban until the Northern NSW Local Health District gave them two extra nursing shifts a week - one in the afternoon and one at night.

She said an extra six hours given to the hospital after staff complained in February was an appreciated stop-gap measure but it did not solve the problem long-term.

Chief Executive of Northern NSW LHD Chris Crawford said a review had been completed and changes to staffing were proposed and would be announced in future.

"Already NNSW LHD has funded some minor works at Casino Hospital which will facilitate these changes to nurse staffing," he said.
