Brett the Roar's x-factor

FOOTBALL: Brandon Borello says Brisbane Roar signing Brett Holman will be the perfect fit for the team as it chases a fourth A-League crown this season.

The Roar finishes its pre-season campaign with a friendly against a Queensland NPL select side in Brisbane today with Holman set to play his first game since signing in the off-season.

Borello said Holman, who won 63 caps for the Socceroos between 2006 and 2013, had had a stellar career but was still able to produce the goods.

"It's not just his name, he talks it on the pitch too,” Borello said of the 32-year-old, who has impressed in training in pre-season.

"He's a very good player and definitely someone who we need.

"He's great for the team and just adds to that attacking force.

"It's not up to me to decide who plays, but he is definitely a player who every team wants.

"I am the guy who makes the runs in behind and is sort of on the end of the attack.

"Brett is the player getting the ball in the centre of midfield and dictating play.

"We need that sort of player in that position. It's great to have him and we're going to enjoy having him throughout the season.”

Borello had a breakout season in the last A-League campaign but said he would not be satisfied until he saw some improvement as he moved into this year.

"As a young player you want to keep building and building and show a bit of consistency,” the 21-year-old said.

"I have to build on last season, score more goals and create more chances and be a bit more clinical.”

Roar coach John Aloisi said this week his team was in a better position than it was at the same time last year and Borello agreed with his mentor.

"The boys are ready to go,” he said.

"We're a lot fitter, we're a lot stronger.

"From a player's perspective we have come a long way since last pre-season.

"For anyone who watches us train on a weekly basis, everyone can see the boys give 100% on the training pitch.

"It gets heated sometimes because everyone wants to win, even in training.

"But that's the mentality John (Aloisi) has installed in us and it won't change, I don't think, at all.”

Borello said while the team did not dwell on last season's 5-4 defeat in the playoff semi-final to

Western Sydney Wanderers, the result would spur the side on this campaign.

"It was such a sour point,” Borello recalled.

"To go 3-0 up and lose the game - that doesn't happen very often.

"For it to happen to this group of players that want to win every time, it was hard to take.

"But I can guarantee it's not going to happen again.”

The Roar gets its A-League campaign under way on October 7 with a home game at Suncorp Stadium against the Melbourne Victory.
