Braced for a flood
WITH the Fitzroy River expected to peak this morning at a minor flood level of 7.3 metres, Mayor Brad Carter said the Rockhampton region had been spared.
"The river is holding steady which is good news," he said yesterday.
"There will be very little impact on our community."
After receiving an update from the Bureau of Meteorology yesterday the Local Disaster Management Group advised that the peak would remain for the majority of today, with a slow decrease in the levels tomorrow.
"Residents can expect to see the river continue to decrease on Monday and Tuesday, with the levels expected to return to the normal five-metre mark on Wednesday," Cr Carter said.
Cr Carter said it was important that residents be prepared for the possible inundation of water.
"We're expecting small inundation on some urban roads like Wood and James Sts, but there should be no water above floor boards," he said.
Cr Carter said the Riverside carparks were expected to re-open later next week.
He urged residents with flood concerns to contact the Local Disaster Contact Centre on 1300 625 659.
The centre will be open from 9am to 1pm today and tomorrow.
