Why this man is selling his 130 rare, prestige cars

A CLASSIC car auction that will put some of the rarest vehicles in Australia under the hammer is expected to attract thousands of people this weekend.

The Queensland Auto Museum has permanently closed and an unreserved auction of its rare classic vehicles and memorabilia will take place on Saturday at Hampton.

Interest is so large that a Facebook post by Lloyds Auctioneers & Valuers has been viewed more than two million times.

More than a hundred people browsed the 130 cars today and thousands more are expected for the car auction, live at the the museum at 67 Erbacher Rd from 2pm.
 


The simulcast auction will take place both in Hampton and online. The cars are expected to raise more than $1 million.

It was a passion for cars that led to the rare collection being stored just outside of Toowoomba.

Roy Gorring started the museum about 12 years ago after people kept coming to see his rare collection of cars.

He's one of the original "pickers", people who scour through old items on private properties to find rare treasures. "I was looking in sheds, finding where there were cars and memorabilia all over Australia. I had the best job in the world, I would go away with a truck and a trailer and come back with piles of stuff."

During that time he found rare items like Joh Bjelke-Petersen's vehicle and a car from the first series of Peter Brock's VC Commodores. Despite their age, Mr Gorring is confident 99% of the cars will run.

He said there would be huge interest in the Torana XU1s, the Brock cars and the early model Holdens. "They're the cars people grew up with," he said.

Mr Gorring said he closed the museum because it was time to start a new chapter in his life. He just wants the cars to find good owners.

There are also thousands of items of memorabilia for sale. Internet bidding started last night at lloydsonline.com.au and will continue until next Thursday.

Auctioneer Bill Hoffman said international buyers from places like the United States, Chile, Brazil, Dubai were interested in the sale.
