IN FIVE hours, the generosity of the Clarence Valley community raised more than $5000 for the family of the late Senior Constable David Rixon.

Snr Const Rixon was fatally shot on March 2 in Tamworth after he pulled over a vehicle.

Since his death, Australia has rallied in support of his wife Fiona and their six kids.

A barbecue fundraiser for the Rixon family was held in Prince St yesterday.

Many stopped to purchase personalised wrist bands, drinks and a sausage sanga.

And many more stopped simply to empty their wallets.

Touched by the generous response, Detective Senior Constable Tony King thanked the local community for their "overwhelming support".

"It hurts members of the force when others are killed doing their job," he said.

"I'm pleased to know there are so many generous people in the Valley. Cars were stopping nearby and drivers were honking at us to come and take money out the window.

"Everyone gave something."
